Aerations with Overseed
Aeration with overseeding is a process that involves two main steps: soil aeration and overseeding.
Soil Aeration-
Soil aeration is performed using a lawn aerator, which removes small plugs of soil from the lawn. This process improves soil structure, reduces compaction, and allows vital nutrients, water, and oxygen to penetrate deeper into the root zone. Aeration is typically done during the growing season when grass is actively growing, making it more responsive to recovery.
Overseeding
Following aeration, overseeding involves spreading grass seed across the lawn. The holes created by aeration provide excellent seed-to-soil contact, which enhances germination rates. This process helps introduce new grass varieties, fills in bare or thin spots, and improves the overall density and health of the lawn.
Benefits
The combination of aeration and overseeding promotes a thicker, healthier turf, improves drought resistance, reduces disease issues, and enhances the lawn’s overall appearance.
Additional Considerations
It is advisable to water the lawn adequately after overseeding and to avoid mowing until the new grass has established itself, typically a few weeks later. Fertilization after overseeding may also be recommended to support the growth of the new seedlings.
Seeding Instructions
Do Not Rake Up The Plugs
Leave the plugs on the lawn. They will break down back into soil over time. This is a very important part of the process.
Watering
After seeding, water the area thoroughly to ensure the seeds settle into the soil. Continue to water lightly once or twice a day for the first two weeks, keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy. 3-5 mins of water per zone.
Mowing
Avoid mowing the area for at least 3-4 weeks after seeding, or until the new grass reaches a height of about 3 inches.
Traffic Management
Keep foot traffic to a minimum for at least 4-6 weeks to allow the new grass to establish without stress.
Long-Term Care
Once the new grass is established, transition to a regular lawn care program, including appropriate watering and mowing as needed.
Following these steps will help ensure a successful seeding and promote healthy lawn growth after core aeration.
